Sheriff Israel's Gun Buy-back program in Pompano Beach today is not only ineffective but the wrong approach.
Ditto for the 20,000 US gun ban laws which have been proven totally ineffective over the 40 years they have been tried.
However, what DOES work is having armed, licensed, and trained citizens carry concealed weapon so the armed criminal or seriously mentally ill shooter believes he may have a good chance of running into an armed, trained private citizen. The Aurora CO shooter drove past 3 Batman theaters to get to the one theater with a "NO-Guns" sign. Works so well that Utah has permitted concealed weapon holders in all public schools for past 15 years.

We need less gun-free-zones, not more proven-ineffective gun ban laws.

Please don?t give a puppy as a holiday gift! As a professional dog behavioral therapist and trainer, I see cases year after year of puppies that were given as a ?wow for now? surprise, but when the newness wore off and their owners became tired of all the daily puppy care responsibilities, they were neglected, given up or even abused.

Many dogs surrendered to shelters are young?just six months to three years old?and many are puppies less than six months old. Many of these dogs will be euthanized simply because the owner didn?t want to take care of them. In fact, three to four million dogs and cats will be euthanized this year in the U.S.! That number could include that cute puppy bought as a Christmas gift!

Adding a puppy to your life is, on average, a 15-year responsibility. Raising a happy, well-balanced puppy requires an enormous time commitment, so a young pup is not a suitable choice for every dog-lover.

If the intended recipient seems ready for a puppy, they must answer ?yes? to these questions:

? Are you ready to participate in training and managing all aspects of the responsibilities of puppy (and dog) ownership, each and every day?
? Can you afford to provide good nutrition, veterinary care, and training?
? Are you willing to walk or take your dog out to toilet at least six times a day?
? Do you have a reliable pet sitter or dog walker who can care for your pet, if needed?

If someone on your gift list really wants a puppy, give them a collar and a leash with a note that a dog or puppy comes with it. (Remember, sometimes an older dog makes the best companion!)

If your gift recipient is really ready for dog ownership, set a date after the holidays to start looking for the perfect dog. Research responsible breeders, or visit your local animal shelter or rescue so the gift recipient can choose a dog that they really want and one that will match their lifestyle.

As a trainer with the world?s largest dog training company, I am committed to helping people better understand how dogs think, act, and communicate, and therefore be responsible dog owners. The holidays are the giving season?so give a puppy his best chance to become a long-term companion and have a happy life by NOT putting him under the tree.

Discrimination Against Singles and Low Income Earners
Why would Pompano Commissioners be asked to discriminate against those single individuals seeking a golf membership as opposed to two members in the family desiring to get memberships at the Pompano Beach Municipal, Pines course?

Well thats exactly the kind of discrimination that city Commissioners are being asked to vote on. So how is this discrimination carried out? If your a Single desiring to be member at the golf course you will be asked to pay $1800 a year, but if you have 2 family members then you get treated preferably. You pay only $1050 per person. Where is the equity? $750 is a BIG difference. Why would families receive preferrence?

Compound those figures with golfers who were allowed to walk the course in 2012 and in 2013 are prevented if the Advisory Board as their way. Not one of them walk the course you can be assured. Bottom line figure: A whopping 145% increase for a golfer wishing to play 3 times per week in 2012 compared to 2013. How would you feel if today you bought something and tomorrow it was 145% more?

Why wasn't members at the golf course surveyed (none of the some 35 or so golfers I know were surveyed) concerning the affordability to continue playing golf at Pompano prior to spending $4 million on renovation? The course could have been repaired without re-designing at a lower cost without PUSHING its middle and lower income bracket earners off the course.

There is a clear message coming fourth from the Advisory Board: 'We want a new clientele". Will the city Commissioners agree to promote a municipal course for the "HAVES" and get rid of us "HAVE NOTS"?

There is a SOLUTION to prevent this discrimination. Increase membership cost by 10%. Establish the same price for all memberships "singles" and family members". Therefore more revenue because Pompano will keep its existing members. Allow walking to occur just as the best courses in the nation do and increase a walking fee of $2 dollars per round. This would increase a single membership's cost by 25% over a golfers membership in 2012.

Dear Editor,
I cleaned up your copy a bit. Newspapers are supposed to be tightly written. I think that even applies to small papers such as the Pelican. If you should admit you need an excellent copy editor, I am available parttime, and my price is negotiable.

Government is suppose to promote exercise among it citizenry especially for those attempting to shed the pounds. However the city of Pompano Beach is contemplating the removal of those who chose to pursue walking the golf course from its renovated golf course. The golf advisory board has recommended this direction to the city commission. I wonder if any of them walk a round of golf instead of riding. The question is: Will those in power have the wisdom to give a better direction?

Amazing, golf courses in West Palm, Hollywood and Miami promote walking for exercise at an affordable cost compared to using a golf cart. In fact a course called Beth Page Black, where the United States Open was held only allows walking among the public. The advisory board suggested walkers create damage to the grass more than a 1000 pound plus golf cart as it enters and leaves the cement golf paths. How can one even consider this as logical?

Thirty percent of the golf courses' revenue is generated from those choosing to walk. Prevent walking and those walkers will go elsewhere. Raising the membership from $800 yearly to approximately $2300 will also prevent those who love the game to stop playing. That is a whopping 300%. This sends out a message that Pompano doesn't desire to have a clientele that can still afford the cost of a round of golf while exercising.

Golf carts also have an up keep cost: Batteries, mechanical issue, insurance, Those choosing to walk have no cost. They merely present a revenue for the city to pay for the cost of the golf course. A solution can be met to allow those who love to walk and can afford it to play the game as they have over the last 30 years at Pompano.

I will be happy to vote Yes on Amendment one to repeal the ban on Sunday alcohol sales in Pompano Beach. I am not happy with part two of the amendment, where the city commission will have the authority to set new hours. I'm afraid the could end up with bars open around the clock. Or on the other hand they might bring back Prohibition.

Hello, My name is Jesse and I visited commercial pier (Anglin's Pier) in FT Lauderdale and had a very disheartening experience on 07/30/2012 at approx 1pm. I was with my two year old son and he had to go "potty" so I asked one of the workers at the pier. They gave us a key for the men's room. To my surprise when I exited a man who later I found out runs the pier started screaming at me and my 2yr old son about using the bathroom. He said it was for customers only, not the public. I offered to mop any sand that was left on the floor and he started cursing at me and my "2 year old" and told us to get out before he calls the cops because we were on private property. I can tell you that I will never visit this place again. Just wanted to inform you of this before anymore of your readers are subjected to such behavior. I have contacted the mayor, commissioners and the Chamber about this matter. I thought the public forum should know how these people treat children. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Jesse (surfer and dad).
